There are websites of people selling invites to various torrent sites.
There is little the site owner can do about it unless we can figure out who the person is on the site.

Buying it might reveal them - or their intermediary, likely be out the $8 then.

Well, that makes you think twice when someone you don't know on another site asks for an invite here, and you're considering it.
He could put the invite up for sale, it tracks back to you, and the buyer may or may not be a good "citizen" for the site (read: spammer, etc.). Most of all, you're being taken advantage of.

We don't punish people for giving invites to bad people unless it's a pattern.
I'm not sure if the invites are directly linked to the invitee's email address or not.
Every member that joined via an invite shows who invited them on their user page.
