Its average income is 25% less than the rest of the state.
Its crime rate is over double the US average. This is despite having 50% more police per capita than the state average.
20.1% live in poverty vs 13.1% for Indiana vs 11.8% for the US. This is higher than every US state but lower than in US territories.
The city's first black police chief (re-appointed by Mayor Pete when he took office), Darryl Boykins, was demoted and later fired for illegally wiretapping his own police officers. Mayor Pete didn't want him fired but changed his mind when the FBI/DoJ said Boykins would face federal wiretapping charges unless he quit or was fired, which Mayor Pete said in his autobiography. Boykins apparently did this to monitor which cops were loyal to him.
