Russia recognise first gay marriage of its citizens
-
Gay marriage in the US came about kind of in the same way.
We actually got gay marriage laws because of the religious right being uncompromising in their effort to squash it. They brought it to the forefront every chance they could and eventually it made it to the supreme court. That's where the only defense they had was to say " Because the bible says so", every other reason was shot down as bigoted and opinionated without proof by even the conservative judges.
The judges got stuck between a bad place and a really bad place. On one hand, if they approved of the law and said it was discriminatory and against the constitution? Gay people could be married in all parts of the country. But if they had ruled in favor of the anti-gay plaintiffs, they would have opened the door to all kinds of marriages being legal by default, strictly on their religious beliefs. A person could marry as many other people as they wanted and by law anything they wanted. All by just saying it was their religious right.
Laws are complicated things. -
Still doesn't exculpate Russia for its Chenchen issues, but this is a good start.

They have fled the country due to death threats and the actions of the police.

Well, so much for having their marriage recognized…

yeah the intolerance of political opposition is almost as widespread as the intolerance of gays:

The story was completely told by the media.
Seems to me that they had some kind of a penalty for the marriage mark in their IDs, or something -
That is great, it is a small step for Russia. But the public opinion of homosexuality in russia must improve

Russia is a failed state and dictatorship (don't worry the USA and UK are only a few years behind), but these two men are true heroes.

To be fair, China and Viet Nam were also communist country, but LGBT people there are able to live quite peacefully thanks to the lack of the religious nutjobs

 those are great news!

Excellent news.

Though a surprising decision, I don't think it matters much. Russian public opinion and their lawmakers are strongly opposed to LGBTI people. Just like in Poland and increasingly Hungary, gay-bashing is a great way to entertain general public, while allowing the political class to preserve the status quo. The same pattern can be seen in a number of western countries too, the topic may just be different - Brexit/EU in the UK, immigration in Italy, France, the US etc. Why expect your politicians to solve actual problems when you can just as well be entertained by ideological fog?

I hope this really changes Russia for the better.

Of course it will change Russia. Especially now that the Russian people have overwhelmingly voted in a referendum to grant Putin the power to remain president until 2036. Very encouraging news indeed for gay and straight people both in Russia and elsewhere. :blownose:

Russian men are really hot, and I'm really glad that this happened.
