There are some games that catch my interest and I would play them if there were no relationships involved.
However, some games either force you into female relationships for the story (such as most of the Ys series I think) or enforce the idea that your character is most certainly straight. Best example I can think of like that is FF9 where Zidane clearly likes Garnet, but personally I finished the game because Vivi and Freya were awesome.

I really don't mind to play a game with onlt main str8 characters, because I think you won't find any gay main character in any videogames before 2010.
For example Final Fantasy games (you mentioned FF IX, I loved Freja, Eiko and Amarant) have only str8 or unidentified sexual preference heroes, I can't recall gay or bi characters in that serie, but I've enjoyed every single chapter.
Sometimes I get the mood "Who cares?!!" "Boring!" when the forced romance begins during your gameplay, but it has never stopped me from playing it.
Anyway I suggest Dragon age titles, you can have str8, bi, gay, lesbian romances and male heroes are hot (Alistair, Hawke) and/or kinky (Zevran, Iron Bull).
