Way back, I had a bit of anonymous public sex, even in famed places like the Rambles in Central Park. It quickly lost its appeal, and as time went on, I wasn't intrigued to see guys duck into the bushes – not far away from other people who didn't want to see that during their walk, picnic, whatever.
Once the Internet made it possible for anyone, even in remote areas, to hook up in private spaces, I felt it was time for public anonymous sex to fade away.
If you want to meet someone at a club, or online like Grindr, and trade very little personal information, that approaches anonymous sex, but at least it can be done in private spaces. Just my opinion.

Yeah it does, there are a couple of places in my city people go to cruise. I don't see the appeal of it though tbh. It seems too risky in every conseivable way…

Nowadays is easy find someone who will invite you to her home or come to yours, but always there is people seeking for a quick one or who like public spaces.
What has changed, in my view, is now you can contact thru an app and meet in the nearest rest room on the mall.
If you are seeking for that, get a couple of condoms on the wallet and open eany gay radars when you are in big public spaces.

Internet, gay saunas and sex clubs have taken over, but I am pretty sure public cruising is still happening, just not as much anymore
