Actually, how do the Oscars work?

I'm asking because here in Mexico, some movies are screened after the Oscars and if they got nominations or won a category it's used in their marketing campaigns

Do all the nominees have been publicly screened in the U.S before the Oscars?

OMG! Michelle Williams is a nominee in Supporting Female Actress! Yas! Eat that, rest of the cast of Dawson's Creek. 😛

I think it is based on the fact that to be eligible for Oscar consideration, a film has to play commercially for two weeks in the Los Angeles area, during the nominee year

So Film Festival screenings are out

Members only or subscription screenings are out

Clip movies (like That's Entertainment) are ineligible, because they are mostly footage from earlier films

Films first shown on TV then released theatrically are also ineligible

That's why almost of all of the Oscar "push" films will be released in LA on or about December 13 or 14

Interesting bit - Charlie Chaplin's film Limelight (made in 1951), won an Oscar for the 1972 year. It was eligible because it had never before been screened in the Los Angeles area.

The rules for Documentaries and Animated Films are a bit more complicated, and I am not sure of the details these days

And yes, here in Australia, the Oscar nominees are screening now, or will be released in a couple of weeks, to coincide with the awards ceremony.

Thanks for that info. I too have always wonder how Oscars' voting is done.

Oooh, that's odd. I wonder if the same could happen today.

"Brokeback Mountain" got robbed. I hope The Academy sheds some light on "Moonlight" this year. Amazing film!

                  Oscars announced the winners

                  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/89th_Academy_Awards

And deja vu, Just like in Miss Universe 2015, when Steve Harvey announces the wrong winner, Oscars presenter, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announces La La Land as Best Picture whereas it should be Moonlight as the rightful winner. They immediately corrected it.

This is the first time, that a gay themed film won an Oscars

That's a pretty big upset.  But I heard La La Land was kind of over-rated.

I agree. La La Land was overrated and people just jumped on that bandwagon. I'm really glad Moonlight won. And I'm also happy that the very much deserved Best Animated Film went to Zootopia! Win win for diversity!

Tell someone you love them today, because life is short.
But shout it at them in German, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

I believe you mean that Moonlight is the first gay themed movie to win Best Picture Oscar.

After watching Moonlight last night, I discovered more than just gay theme in that movie, black man and gay is a lethal complete package and Barry Jenkins did deliver the movie in a different way Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain 12 years ago. I read many comments that Moonlight win is a payback for a biggest upset in Oscar history after Crash successfully beat Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture.

Though, I'm glad that gay theme movie finally won Best Picture Oscar, its still looks really political. The Academy Award voters couldn't stand a gay white man, a cowboy for being the winner of the top prize, because the most of the voters are white man. It would be easier for them to vote Moonlight that directed by black man and a story of a gay black man in a poverty, because it has nothing to do with them.

I think this is the 5th time that SAG Awards and Oscars doesn't agree on their Best Actor Category, usually winners of SAG awards also wins in Oscars' acting categories (movies)

I gotta say, the idea that people outside of the US film industry even care about the Oscars is completely bewildering to me. It seems so damn self-congratulatory and detached from the world beyond. I don't mean to sound flippant. I sincerely don't understand it, and I'm curious to know what the appeal of music/film industry awards ceremonies is for "normal people" outside of the insular Hollywood bubble.
