      We already have food deserts in the US.  This problem would get much worse without food stamps.  These areas would fall even deeper into poverty.

      I do agree about the soda and all that.  That also is an issue in food deserts.  Convenience stores are the only option for some people and they mainly sell junk food.  Many states do incentivize people to buy healthy food at farmers markets by doubling the SNAP balance spent at the farmers market.  It helps the farmer and the person buying the food.

      My biggest issue with food stamps is how the grocery stores take advantage.  I live in a low income largely immigrant community and there is a particular grocery chain that jacks up the prices in this low income neighborhood because people who use food stamps are not as price sensitive and will pay higher prices.  i drive to the next town over that is a very high income town and the prices there are lower.  It shouldn't be this way.

        @rawr:

        If they didn't get food stamps, they would just figure out how to eat for a few dollars a day. This is kind of justified as "who's problem is it anyways?" Is it really a dairy farmer's fault that companies figured out they can pay their employees so little that they qualify for government assistance? I could argue either side of this easily but I think it's kind of ridiculous. I honestly don't know what the solution is. The 10 year job outlook for America is very bad as companies continue to embrace automation. You don't need a bank teller because ATMs are automated, automated gas purchases, automated grocery store purchases, manufacturing jobs are mostly automated or are sourced overseas, some companies already have robotic warehouses, and we may have mainstream automated cars, transportation, and delivery services soon.

        I mean what is the future for going to be like for the average American? You work a part time customer service job and never have any ability to accumulate money, while the government pays for everything? Do we just let people die who get sick and can't afford $85,000 for the Hep C treatment that costs a few hundred to make? Something, sooner or later has to drastically change, but I have no idea what.

        You're right, there needs to be a conversation on what to do but I think the goal needs to be to have the least amount of people on Food Stamps as possible. It is no longer a system built on helping those in poverty get out of poverty, it is now operating to keep businesses afloat because the country has failed to guarantee it's people even the slightest chance at fair wages and other economic opportunities. The great thing about America is we always figure out a way to move forward and I believe we will get to a better standing, but the key to doing so is coming together. We are so divided that we do not want to see each other gain any kind of benefit. If I hear that someone's life was saved due to ACA, I don't first think that that person's life shouldn't have been saved because of the color of their skin or because they were poor or a woman…etc. I think yes, someone's life was saved. We've become lost in our differences instead of saying, yes we're different but our differences DO NOT determine how we should be treated. We are broken as a country because too many of us simply do not want to see others gain anything. One side (conscious or subconscious nationalists/supremacists) has always had this view historically, and lately the other side (real oppressed/perceived oppressed) has been developing this view. We need an independent party but that's not possible when we're this divided.

            @rawr:

            I don't know, but people who live in areas where the majority voted for him, are dying from drug overdoses left and right and there's probably a couple thousand tons of methamphetamine in the country right now. He's going after things that don't seem to be an actual problem when you think about it. More people die in the US every day from opiate overdoses than Muslim terrorists in a year. There's even more suicides on an average day.

            Note: I'll be fair, not exclusively his supporters, I'm just suggesting that he hasn't done anything important to help his supporters in certain regions.

            As for me problem is very clear, it's only my opinion from the side, but open borders with South America is really destructing US people, There are a lot drugs from Mexico and сountries below, causes standart rule of capitalism "supply and demand". So the Wall, really save your nation. Maybe Trump too concentrate on the border, but definetely it makes sense, cause i've never heard before that illegal immigrants, can vote for the POTUS, it was also shock for me. How it really could happen, and why no one seems don't care about Person ID's, when voting, for such important things.

            Mass killing by Muslim terrorists in US, as I know, was only twice 9/11 and Orlando. Maybe I'm wrong but, I think you simply don't fully feel it, and hope you never feel it. Muslims ban, is also saves life of US people, when Europe, open gates for them, from the start, I know that it will disaster, but all this vanilla europeans living in illusions, simply was "little child with fairy tales", and now fairy tale become a horror. Just imagine Christmas Market in Germany and here comes big truck on it, fully disaster.

            But wait a minute, what if this areas not fall into poverty. When things get worse, human nature always trying to survive.

              We don't have "open borders" that's a political/media lie. I definitely think we need better border security on the southern border (and the vast majority of Americans agree) but a physical wall is incredibly cost ineffective. I have no idea where the majority of drugs entering the US come from, but I do know that there are many, many other sources than the Mexican border. Even if the wall could effectively stop the flow of drugs from Mexico (it won't) that does absolutely nothing to stop the flow in other regions. Even, in regions of the southern border where there are walls, the drug cartels tunnel underneath it, or smuggle the drugs in cars/trucks and go right through the border crossing.

              Some members of the TSA (Airport Security Police Force) were recently caught smuggling massive amounts of cocaine. Walls don't stop airplanes and it's nothing new.

                Of course it's not fully helps, but as for me, more control on the borders, could help, at least tunnels, most of them, will be closed and prevent to build another. The Great Wall helps China through the history, why such wall couldn't help there. 95% of the drugs comes from South America. I like Duterte position about drugs, so maybe US could took his methods in the future. With air is always more control, then with ground. Also good law-height radar-system near with border will helps, too. Cost ineffective or effective, who cares, if Mexico will pay for that.

                  There is no way a wall will keep drugs out of the country, as long as there is demand they will find their way into the country.

                  Mexico will never pay for the wall, unless the US invades them, I don't know why anyone has ever believed that.

                  Duterte is a murderer, his "methods" are called murder, Russians might be OK with that but that's certainly not what the US is going to do.

                    The US has been at war with drugs for 40+ years. It doesn't really work, the US has the largest prison population of any country. Duterte's tactics may work in such a small country, but I don't see it lasting and there's zero evidence that such tactics are effective long term. The people who participate in the drug trade are attracted to risk and the money associated with high risk activities. All US policy has done, is make the drug business more lucrative for the dealers.

                    US Tax payers are paying. Mexico isn't paying for anything. The estimate for the wall is 20-25 billion dollars.

                              and NOW here comes TRUMP, you can criticize him for anything you want.
                              But the most important thing that he will save you from the WAR, from the REAL WAR.
                              The most of you don't know about it nothing, and don't imagine what is it.

                              Russian people know a lot about war, and don't want it again, but if the war will start, we will fight.  :cool2:

                              Thus, if for you TRUMP = homophobe, racist, rapist and other things. Please imagine, will you still moaning about it, when your hometown will lie in ruins after nuclear bomb, i don't think so…

                              I'm still amazed how little attention anyone people have to Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton both talking during the second(?) Democratic primary debate that they wanted to form a Bush style coalition of countries to go into Syria with. Both even seemed perfectly comfortable with having the US fighting Russia as though that made any sense whatsoever.

                              It's helped to make me incredibly happy to see as Trump was getting into office all those "moderate rebel" groups lamenting they weren't receiving so much support from the US anymore. America's foreign policy has been batshit insane for years and we finally have someone in office that is against going dick waving with our military in every country that looks at us funny. Yet in spite of this, we have a collection of Russophobic journalists in the media that try fear mongering regarding Russia at every turn, some of the loonier ones like Louise Mensch suggesting anyone on social media that isn't petrified of Russia (or even god forbid pro-Putin) is secretly some paid Russian internet troll.

                                  It's the same old story over and over and over again, in the middle centures it was Europe, now it's US, nothing new. This person which above your reply, classic example. Pity that US gov, very active rewriting the history, pity that with them money destroying history of the world, when was destroyed Temple of Baalshamin and Triumphal Arch in Palmyra by ISIS, they still shout that they are poor freedom army not terrorists and how dare this agressive Russians came and save object of UNESCO World Heritage. So now ISIS again conquer Palmyra and destroyed already Roman Theater. All this doing only for dividing countries, divide Syria was US plan, and it didn't work, but works with Iraq, works with Libya. Make a mess in countries very strange US gov. tradition, as I know, from Trump books, it's all about dollar and big debt before US people, and War for the US gov is the only answer. No matter with whom, but it must be the war.

                                  Every day I ask a question, how so young country like a teenager, does all this bad stuff and nothing happend with him, but offsping period will end someday, maybe somethings will change in Adult period, but if not, I don't know what exactly will happend with such country, definetely it will be something bad, and it's too sad as for me, cause of: Art-Deco, Detroit Borocco, Space Age Style, and some classic Hollywood. It's real good things, but all this was in the past, not now.

                                  In conclusion for the most Russians, Gays or Straights no matter, all this rhetoric from the West, already makes us smile and sometimes laugh. I think Putin (based on the west media) nowadays everywhere, you can blame him for everything you want, you had a bad haircut, your telephone is broken, your boyfriend break up with you, all bad things in your life, that you can imagine. Only one man guilty for this — PUTIN. It's a fun paradox, non-sense and absurd for us, but we ok with that, just some political satire, cause life is not easy in Russia, and we have to deal with a lot problems, we simply don't have time to care about poor pandas, lgbt, feminism and etc. We just want blue sky above our heads.
                                  How sang Victor Tsoi in one of his songs:
                                  "But if there's a pack of cigarettes in my pocket
                                  Then the day's not all that bad"

                                      Oh it's you change it back, icon of Question Mark near with the name of the topic?
                                      Pity that strange moderator, changes it back to "thumb down".

                                      Thought all americans know their constitution especially part of freedom of speech, now I know that not all… sad

                                          So, in that case, what this weird "Welcome" means?
                                          Maybe you should stop to write wierd, non-sense things…

                                            I saw the title of the thead and i assumed that you were a new user. The wlcome means exactly that…. welcome as welcome to the forum. I agree that i should have red the original post but that doesn't mean that you should be hostile.
