If you want to clean it, use a steam device. That kills all germs. then let it dry outside in the sun.
Use a mattress for a maximum of 8-10 years, depending on quality.

A top quality mattress can last up to 25 years and would have a guarantee stating this.  You should always use a mattress protector as this save's you having to do anything other than turn your mattress as directed by the manufacturer.  If it does become stained or soiled NEVER use a wet cloth as most beds will just soak it up into the top layers and you can't rinse out any detergent and it will take so long to dry you can get mould.  As scott1966 said use a good steam cleaner and give it a good going over during the summer months so it can dry out quickly,  not only does this kill the germs but also dust mites and any smells.  You can buy solutions to add to the water used to disinfect or add fragrance but I fine just a dash of lemon juice does the same.

If you do have a wet accident bicarbonate of soda poured on and left to suck up the wet works wonders this can then be vacuumed off, you can also do this to freshen the mattress, leave it on for a few hours then vac of gently, do not try to rub it in.  These are old fashioned methods used before steam cleaners were common place.

Get a top of the range mattress protector, that seals the entire mattress inside.    Also make sure it's waterproof so any spills don't soak into the mattress.

The average mattress should last 8 - 10 years, but check the label as some are only good for 3 - 5 years, while some are good for up to 20 years. How long your mattress lasts also depends on whether you follow the instructions on its care or not.    Also, if your weight is classed as "non standard" (meaning: you're overweight) then your mattress will need to be changed sooner.

The others are correct, only steam your mattress to clean it.  However, you can also do a light Fabrise (sp?) to freshen the smell.

BTW: I know all of this because we just bought a new bed.

I will vacuum the mattress thoroughly.  After that I mix baking soda with lavender oil (1 cup soda - 2 or 3 drops of essential oil) then with a sifter spread it out evenly on the mattress, after allowing it to sit for awhile vacuum it up.  I also use this mixture on carpets.

"Lavender" is derived from the Latin lavare, meaning, "to wash."

I am also a firm believer in the power of sunlight and if it's easy enough to pull it outside for a few hours of sun bathing it works wonders.  I regularly sun my pillows and comforter to freshen them up.

You can vacuum it, steam clean it ,and put it out in the sun and wind.
But any particular stains, I would not know how to get rid of.

I am definitely investing in one for the future lol. I've never heard of a mattress protector honestly
