      I'm a kind of spiritual that hates the words "faith" "belief" and "dogma" so not really religeous, just a wanderer really 🙂

        i dont like to talk about my faith as i dont like people to do the same. anyone who's preachin n stuff's nutts in my eye. it only drags people away from "god" or whatever you want to call it.

          @raphjd:

          Believing in god, just in case, is extremely dishonest.

          It is not "just in case".  It is choosing to believe based upon the reasons stated earlier.  Dishonest to whom?  Definitely not to God, because he would know anyway.

          @nordicblue:

          The possibilities defined by Pascal's Wager can be thought of as a decision under uncertainty with the values of the following decision matrix.

          | | God exists (G) | God does not exist (¬G) |
          | Belief (B) | +∞ (infinite gain) | −1 (finite loss) |
          | Disbelief (¬B) | −∞ (infinite loss) | +1 (finite gain) |

          The wager uses the following logic (excerpts from Pensées, part III, §233):

          God is, or God is not. Reason cannot decide between the two alternatives.
             A Game is being played… where heads or tails will turn up.
             You must wager (it is not optional).
             Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that God is. Let us estimate these two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing.
             Wager, then, without hesitation that He is. (...) There is here an infinity of an infinitely happy life to gain, a chance of gain against a finite number of chances of loss, and what you stake is finite. And so our proposition is of infinite force, when there is the finite to stake in a game where there are equal risks of gain and of loss, and the infinite to gain.
             But some cannot believe. They should then 'at least learn your inability to believe...' and 'Endeavour then to convince' themselves.

            It is believing "just in case".

            If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing.

            Pascal's Wager is all about; all things being equal, you should believe just in case you are wrong.

            It's the same logic kids use for Santa and the Easter Bunny.

              I am not religious and it is a big mystery for me why some people are religious. I just don't get it. For me everything makes much more sense without a god (gods, goddesses etc)

                    Define "religious". Do I believe in a higher intelligence/power? yes!
                    Do I follow any specific rites of worship? no!
                    Does that make me religious or not religious?

                    Also, I don't see ppl addressing the homosexuality question. Orthodox religions are, basically, dead set against
                    homosexuality. I have come across ppl who read the bible to mean that only anal sex between men is forbidden
                    and everything else is allowed.

                    Personally, I think that anyone who bothers with who is sleeping with whom and via which orifice, is actually more of a gossip or pervert
                    than a glorious all-father to whom we should all turn.

                          I could be deemed religious by some, but I feel I am more of a spiritualist person,

                              I am an atheist.

                              Atheism is the absence of belief that any deities exist..

                              But can you believe that no deities exist?

                                      We must not to mistake faith with religion. I have faith in God, in Jesus and what the last said and did. I'm also religious because I follow many interpretations of the Word according to the Roman Church, but "religion" is something that lays on shoulders of men and men are not perfect nor enough strong to hold it without making mistakes.
                                      I don't say I take only the things that please me, but at least I can spot some "discrepancies" between the original message of Christ and some modern behavior…

                                          Atheist all the way here.

                                          As for religion and homosexuality, I know of none that like us and plenty that hate us.  That has nothing to do with my atheism, it's just the way it is.

                                          We don't need religions to work out how to be good people and get along with one another.  We can be rational and work things out for ourselves if we can shake off the habit of religion.  it requires us to take responsibility for ourselves though and there fewer people ready to do that, than wrap themselves in the security blanket of a higher being who they pray is going to take care of them.
