How do you tell a loved one who's vanilla about fetishes without scaring them away?
and don't just say "tell them and be honest"
is there a way? or is this kept secret? -
Personally, I believe you should be able to be completely honest with your partner. If you feel like you can't be honest with them, you may want to review why you feel that way and if the relationship is really worth keeping.
That being said. If you can't be blunt about it or walk into the room wearing/holding the fetish, then you can trying bring up the topic about fetishes in general and go through a whole bunch with yours being in the mix. Make it a drinking game, or rate your interest on a scale of 1-5 with them.

How much terrible can be your fetishes? There are some degree… if you have a fetish for feet I don't see why someone would be scared... if you have a fetish for eating poo or drinking piss obviously is another story... Start from light ones and then if you see it's receptive you can try push to the other...
