Personally, I think there was more to the story.  As far as I remember, John didn't know that Ryan had actually seen and filmed him.  I think there was a lot that John did not know and was likely a bit uncomfortable with, and to avoid the situation and its awkwardness, he just cut Ryan out of his life.  I am not sure how much John knew about Ryan's perspective on things.

This movie has been getting stunning reviews. I can't wait to see it, and hope it wins some nominations award time or better yet an Oscar.
