Don't download too much too soon. It'll still be there when you have a ratio buffer
Leave your torrent client running even when you have completed your download
Choose torrents with fewer seeders but lots of leechers
Check out the freeleech torrents where you can download for free but anything you upload gives you a credit

And for getting seed bonus points to swap for upload gigs:
