I sent a message to someone about a comment they had made on an upload of mine and I was wondering if they will see and understand the context or if I need to lower my anonymity for that

The message will only actually send if either they accept PM's from everyone, or they have their settings to friends only, AND have put you on their friends list.

Whether you will be able to see who they are depends entirely on how you sent the PM. If you sent the PM to them the "normal" way by responding to a PM they sent you, or by going to their profile and pressing the button there, then you will both be able to see who the messages are going to/from.

This changes however when you upload a user by pressing the button to send the uploader a PM on a torrent details page. They will only appear to you as "Anonymous Uploader". They will be able to see your username, however even if they reply to your PM, you will NOT be able to see their username. The only time that you will know the username of the "Anonymous Uploader" conversation is if that user explicitly divulges that information themselves.

So yes... They absolutely WILL know your username, but that is really ALL they will be able to know if your profile security is set to strong.
