From what I can gather, torrents with thumbnails in jpeg also have vtx files of the same name and size. So I am guessing it's some kind of image format. If so, why are they there if the jpegs are already there? And how does one easily comb through to exclude them in the torrent when the torrent has hundreds of files? My current client qbitorrent allows sorting by name, size, but not file type. Not useful when these files have the same name and size as their jpeg counterparts. Are other clients able to sort by type?

Although the vtx files are essential to generate the thumbnails using VTM, it's possible to configure the application to discard them after the images are generated.

As for torrents containing those files, you can either delete after download (their size is negligible) or mark them to not be downloaded in the first place.

Even though qbittorrent doesn't allow to sort by extension, it has a name filter feature. In the "add new torrent" window you can press CTRL+F and type
.vtx
and then uncheck those files.

A VTX file typically refers to a drawing template created by older versions of Microsoft Visio. It contains preconfigured layouts, stencils, and formatting (like flowcharts or organization charts) used as a baseline for new drawings. Microsoft replaced this format with .vstx in Visio 2013.
