A suspect in the attack at Berlin's Pride festival that left one person dead and at least 29 others injured was killed during a confrontation with police in a nearby suburb, The Associated Press reported, citing authorities.

German authorities on Sunday launched an intensive manhunt for Abdul Ballout, a German citizen with Lebanese roots. Ballout was killed following a nearly 24-hour search. Prosecutors said he had previously sought to join the militant Islamic State group.

"Everything we see here points to us dealing with an Islamic terror attack," German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said.

The minister said the suspect had previously come to the attention of authorities for multiple crimes, as well as his "radicalization and belonging to the Islamist scene."

Dobrindt said Ballout was born in Germany and that his mother became a naturalized German citizen in 2002, three years before he was born. He said the suspect previously received a suspended prison sentence of one year and 10 months but did not disclose what he had been convicted of.
