    The Massacres of Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia were carried out in German-occupied Poland by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, with the support of parts of the local Ukrainian population, against the Polish minority in Volhynia, Eastern Galicia, parts of Polesia, and the Lublin region from 1943 to 1945. The UPA's actions resulted in up to 100,000 Polish deaths.

    The Ukrainian Insurgent Army was a Ukrainian nationalist partisan formation founded by the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists on 14 October 1942. The UPA launched guerrilla warfare against Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and both the Polish Underground State and Polish Communists. The UPA carried out massacres of Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia, which are recognized by Poland as a genocide. The goal of the OUN was to establish an independent Ukrainian state.

    Today we commemorate the Polish victims of ruthless crimes committed by Ukrainian nationalists (OUN and UPA) during World War II.

    During the 1943 Volhynia Massacre, members of Ukrainian militias attacked over 100 villages and killed thousands of Polish civilians.

    Mirosław Hermaszewski, a Polish pilot, astronaut/cosmonaut and the first Pole to ever go to space, was one of those who survived the Volhynia Massacre.

    A unit of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) attacked his home village of Lipniki in March 1943. The mother of the future astronaut was shot by a Ukrainian while fleeing with 18-month-old Mirosław in her arms. The murderer thought he had killed her, but did not fatally wound her. Then, she fled to a neighbouring village. She was in shock and did not realize that little Mirosław was not with her. It was not until the next day that his father found him. Unfortunately, Mirosław's father was later killed by Ukrainian nationalists.

    Genocidal Ukrainian nationalists from UPA are still officially honored in Ukraine.
