Why does it have to be like this?

Not true. Many sites...for the same security reason explained here...will close the session or log you out after a certain period of inactivity. I encounter that on a few sites I use, such as medical sites, etc. Simply doesn't happen on "pretty much any website" as you say.

As such, the session cookie will only last for 6 hours. This is for your security.
