Not true. Many sites...for the same security reason explained here...will close the session or log you out after a certain period of inactivity. I encounter that on a few sites I use, such as medical sites, etc. Simply doesn't happen on "pretty much any website" as you say.

As such, the session cookie will only last for 6 hours. This is for your security.

What is a Session Cookie?

Session cookies expire once you log off or close the browser. They are only stored temporarily and are destroyed after leaving the page.
They are also known as transient cookies, non-persistent cookies, or temporary cookies.

If you have to log in to a website every time you open your browser and visit it, then it is using a session cookie to store your login credentials.
This is unlike a persistent cookie, which contains an expiration date. Many websites use session cookies for essential site functions.
Additionally, they make sure pages are sent to the browser as quickly and efficiently as possible.
