@Rotron Thank you very much for your very informative discussion. I much prefer those to very short answers like, "ask the help desk."

I appreciate the information on the ROK. I have not been there, so my knowledge is based on what I see in the media, as well hearing lies from the DPRK, and then "inverting" them. It is ironic that I have more experience with the North than with the South.

That said, my experience in the North was very carefully controlled. I was part of a sports delegation, although we had a couple of half-days of touring around Pyongyang. It was clear that our minders were showing us what they considered to be the "best" of places--stores filled with food items, broad avenues with good paving (but absent of cars), temples to the Great Leader and Dear Leader. In the mausoleum holding the remains of Kim-Il Sung and Kim-Jong Il, the two glass boxes holding their bodies are kept at a very low temperature. I referred to the the two guys as the "Kim-sicles" (after the frozen candy "Popsicle"), but I made sure that nobody official heard me say that.

I did not know about the pornography ban in ROK. That seems odd for a first-world country, although it is good that there is freedom to produce gay-themed drama. In the DPRK, producing pornography would probably be met by immediate execution.

Nevertheless, there are lots of gay guys (and lesbians too, I'm sure) in the DPRK. Sometimes we shared changing rooms with DPRK players, and we all know a watchful eye when we see one. But a couple of times I carelessly sent back a return glance, and I saw shame and fear on the face of the Korean guy. I felt so sad. As much as I would have enjoyed a good fuck with him, I think a long, caring hug would have been more helpful.

@eobox91103 Oh, what you have said about DPRK are all so true but they are all controlled spaces; there is nothingness beyond them. Imagine whole towns have lights on and lights off schedules daily. For a Northerner to be caught with anything coming from the South, most especially media like Kdrama will get you killed right away. Anything that would show the South is so much better or a better place to live at.

I am all so aware of the sport diplomacy. I was not aware that it still continues with all that tension between the North and the South. They also have something similar about family reunions who were divided between them. It's always a dramatic scene but this was stopped and I think the South wants this resumed.

        d104ebc8-9f04-49e7-8fe0-0d0531503734-image.png

They involve those in their 80s and older who are desperate to reunite with their long-lost relatives before they die. But North Korea, which often uses such reunions as a bargaining chip in dealings with South Korea, is unlikely to accept the offer because it's steadfastly rebuffing Seoul's and Washington's offers to resume talks on its nuclear program and other issues while focusing instead on perfecting its weapons technology. Such bastards! 😡

Oh since you mentioned about your time there... and yes they have eyes everywhere. These were all brought up to light by defectors to the South on how they are treated by the family they call gods. About the gays there... poor guy who gave you an eye and just bowed down in hopelessness. I feel so sorry about them. There is a movie titled "One Summer Night" of 2 DPRK soldiers with this scene.

The handsome big guy is currently serving army time. Hopefully, he is being treated well in there publicly knowing he did this series before going in.

As South Korea's very first gay dating reality series, "His Man" brings together a group of eight hot, sexy, free and single gay men to a shared house where they are to live, interact and open up to each other in their quest for “true love”.

@Rotron Thank you for your insights. I don't know how much "sport diplomacy" continues today: I went in the summer of 2012, less than one year after Kim Jong Il came to power...perhaps there was a desire to show more open-ness to the West. That has, of course, changed.

And yes, we were warned that we would be be watched all the time. Two of my team-mates were gay (and a couple), and they knew to not show any affection for each other, even in the "privacy" of their twin-bed hotel room.

One of my favourite photos from the trip was from the hotel room: There was a small table between the two beds with a lamp, a single-line telephone that would go only to the reception desk, and a clock radio. I was curious to pull the table away from the wall and see what I found:
                b26d1cf9-0bfd-41da-bfe9-7371b7f37c8b-image.png

The phone, lamp, and clock didn't need that many wires. We assumed that there were microphones built into the table, but we didn't want to test that theory by saying anything illegal.

@eobox91103 Holy evil tentacles! Going to this extent just for control. The imagination of them thinking you were spies is already scary enough. What else could be in that room or even in the bathroom?!

Thanks for sharing. It just shows how much evil would go far enough to have the idea of being in control of things. As far as reality goes though, having too much control will always in a way are bound to collapse. It may take years or generations but nothing permanently stays forever the same. 😉

OMG! This is a great series to watch if you liked the series Breaking Bad. I had no idea this show existed until recently, when it was nominated for best series at the Golden Globes:

@djsoapbubble Definitely a great recommendation. Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul definitely belongs on top. I am such a fan of legal-themed shows Western and Korean. 👍

@Rotron Yeah, I'm actually filing a lawsuit for injuries. I'm okay now for the most part, but I still have a couple of things that need improvement. Let's just say I now know what will happen to their home or building insurance premiums if I win. But as far as the show itself, it's so good. So, if you like legal shows with a dice of the cartel thrown into the mix, this show is for you.

@Rotron Oh, and Western. OMG. I'm also watching the prequels to Yellowstone. Yellowstone is pure soap opera western drama, but I think you'd enjoy these shows as well.

@djsoapbubble I'll check it out. I watched a lot of Western when I was a kid. Not much into them but if the story is interesting I'd watch it of course. The last Western / Cowboy themed movie I've seen was "The Power of the Dog". It had the WTF-effect by the end and it's got something gay in it but not that emphasized as you'd expect at those times. I thought I was gonna see Dr. Strange smooch a twinky 😁 but you'll get a glimpse at his weiny.

@Rotron Oh, yeah. Power of the Dog was a good movie, and I remember the Oscar nominations it received, but it couldn't compete against CODA.

As far as the prequels and Yellowstone, they are all definitely western dramas, but Yellowstone definitely feels more "soap opera-esque" if that makes any sense, as there is family betrayal, fights, and just good filthy drama. I love it as it centers around the Dutton family, starring Kevin Costner as the family patriarch, as well as the cowboy ranchers, who also go through their trials and tribulations. I love the character of Beth—she's a fuckin' bitch. I love her, although I do find her hysterectomy storyline a little far-fetched. But yeah, that's my girl right there.

The prequels to Yellowstone still revolve around the Dutton family, but it's more history-related, as it makes you feel what people went through during those times as far as socio-economic status, early diseases, famine, immigration, Christian "nationalism" against Native Indians, etc.,

I can't say 1883 or 1923 are as "soap-opera-esque" as compared to Yellowstone, but they are definitely good dramas with a great cast. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are in 1883 and Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford are in 1923.

I'm not trying to persuade you to watch it, lol! But all of these shows are filmed in beautiful locations. I wouldn't want to live there personally, as I'm a city boy, but the locations are absolutely majestic and breathtaking.
