I voted for Trump in 2016. That election, like the 2020 one, was (for me) more about protecting the country against one candidate than it was about voting for another. (I supported John Kasich in the primaries - canvased for him, held a fundraiser in my home for him).

Put any 3 people in a room and there will be some politics... but that doesn't mean you embrace and extend those political views - when your job is the FBI or the Justice Dept. Yes, there were examples of politics in both before Trump (it might have been a clue when I mentioned Nixon... who, this may come as a shocker to you: was the 37th President of the US.. and 37 is less than 45, so that means he was President before Trump)... No President before Trump had attempted to use the FBI and Justice Dept as a political weapon more than Nixon. Trump took what Nixon did and amped it up on steroids! The former (political appointees) indeed serve at the pleasure of the President - and can be let go with the bat of an eyelash.

The latter, however, are protected by Federal Labor laws, and their unions. It's actually rather HARD to fire career federal employees... which is why those positions are sought-after, even though the pay is poor.
