His support of Trump in 2016 enhanced discord in the States, as well as a weakening of NATO. Not surprisingly, he also supported Brexit (to weaken the EU) and Scottish independence (perceived as weakening the UK). After the Brexit referendum, he called on PM Theresa May to rapidly implement Brexit because "it was the will of the people." Putin's support of popular preference (i.e., democracy) was, needless to say, quite out of character for him.
