It was such a joy to watch. I was 14 then - and had just realized what was what. Did not understand the full implications of what it meant at that time, but came to appreciate them as I grew older.

Florida was Bryant's home base and the coverage of her "Save Our Children" repeal crusade was daily, front-page news here, both pre-pie and post-pie.  The notorious (glorious?) pastry was thrown by gay rights activist Tom Higgins.

Some years later, my first "real guy" approached me on our famous beach and led with a discussion about Anita's pie (still a source of local gay pride and tourist curiosity).  Then he put a dab of zinc oxide cream on my nose to keep it from burning.  Then we went to see his accommodations at the Marlin Beach Hotel.  And, then.
