This is a really good point.  Attraction has a physical and a mental component.  If we say "to our/their own kind" we are implying many things here, not just physical attraction.

I have felt physically attracted to guys of age groups, racial groups and body types different from my own.  But normally is their attitudes and interests which seal the deal…or break it.

Now...the look-alike boyfriends...that's really scary as it makes me think of overly narcissistic and overly dependent persons or that our beauty fashions have become homogenized, and mass produced and distributed.

The above is very true, I think. But it also depends on what kind of attraction you're taliking about. There's a mighty big difference between the guys I only want to fuck, and those I want to have a romantic relationship with. The number of guys I find physically attractive is very wide indeed, whereas they guys I fall in (real) love with is much smaller. This is where the mental component mentioned above kicks in, and is more important than the physical aspects. Let's face it: looks come and go. The inside traits last a lot longer, for good or ill.

On a strictly physical level, I would say many guys are attracted to opposites just as much as similarities. It seems that we are fascinated by what we are not. Personally I have a thing for hairy chests, but I myself have none. I'm also very white skinned, but I find darker complections - ranging from olive to French Roast coffee - really grab my attention. On the other hand, if a hot blond-haired blue-eyed guy wanted to fool around I would be into it. Lastly, I also find that my  taste in guys has evolved and expanded as I've gotten older, meaning that types I wuldn't have especially paid much attention to as a young guy now get a rise out of me.

All this means is that people are complicated, and simple dichotomies (or non-dichotomies?) in taste don't fit comfortably in real life.

There are the gays (and bisexual men) who are largely attracted to "their own kind".  I see plenty of boyfriend twin couples out there.

But I can't agree on the "in general" part since there also a lot of people who eroticise "opposites attract".  I see a lot of Daddy/Boy couples.  I see a lot of people how only date outside their race.  I see a lot of butch/femme couple.
