If I wanted to just get off, I'd go to nifty. If I want to feel some intimacy, I would go to fanfiction.net and look for tragic pairings (Chris/Wesker, Cloud/Zack, Naruto/Minato, etc.). I am guaranteed to find something angsty before I even set the "Angst" genre.

Well, THERE is the difference between erotic and romantic fiction

But yes, go around websites like Nifty and Literotica THEN compare it with websites like Archive of Our Own and you'll see quite a difference in the average.

Like, Nifty and Literotica can and will spend paragraphs upon paragraphs to describe the most delectable / hot / passionate sex. But the longer you read the longer you'll notice that a lot of those are truly…sex-oriented. Characters leaned more towards porn archetype and two-dimensional characters are much more common there.

Ao3, meanwhile, definitely focused on relationships, feelings, and emotions. A lot featured no sex, or glossed over sex.

For me, both works on different levels. Sometimes I want to imagine scenarios, for which I'll read Literotica and Nifty, but other times I want details, exquisite details, and for that I'll go to Ao3.

And then of course a caveat: this is just the average works. The bests works on all sites that I have read are usually more balanced in both sex and romance and character development.

Haven't you had a similar experience with any male authors?

there's one comment in there that i resonate with… to do with most of the m/m stuff is written by women and tends to be much more about the characters and relationship building. and the men authors, who are fewer, are focused more on the sex.

it's just, i feel like i've been given mental hand-job via the prose and all this time i considered myself a "gold-star" gay, lol
