I don't think you have to be a member to access all of the lists and bookshelves.  They have compiled some interesting subgenre lists for when you are in a specific mood, such as - 'books featuring uncircumcised characters', 'best gay fetish:toys', 'books featuring bears', etc.
Their bookshelf is tagged with a range of categories from 'athletes' to 'twincest'.
I've read some amazing books that I never would have found on my own with help from goodreads.
