He is part of an institution that has opposed marriage equality in the past, and still continues to do so.

The Catholic church will not change overnight, or even over decades- it will take time if ever before they can come to terms with the fact that they are fighting a losing battle over ownership of the concept of marriage, which predated the church in the first place.
