It made me think perhaps there was something inherently unattractive about man on man to the general population. It is said romance novel/comic type books are the more popular form of "porn" for women. I suppose what bothered me wasn't that women weren't watching gay porn, but that I didn't hear of them sexually enjoying the thought of two guys together. If I had investigated their reading materials I might've realised this wasn't so. Back then not many girls would have been openly discussing gay stuff as a turn on, though.

I have read articles in the past about the phenomenon of Japanese Yaoi manga having a very large female readership- and the appeal at least for those types of comics centers around the more romantic aspects of the relationship between two men.

Related to this, it also surprised me to find that a large number of m/m romance writers are women- maybe even a majority in fact. And they don't shy away from explicit depictions of sex too.  😉
