In her opinion, it would cut down on impulsive marriages and help deter marriage "fraud".

Ditto.

I think it's ridiculous under any other legal circumstances, though. Marriage between legal citizens should not be treated like an episode of The Newlywed Game for the sake of state approval or validation. Granted, lots of people get married for the wrong reasons. Some people even do it with malicious, self-serving ulterior motives. But that shouldn't mean that everyone has to have big daddy government's blessing just to get married.

If so a lot of immigration officials DO ask these questions and they have to have interviews , home visits etc… to prove that they are indeed a genuine couple

I bet impulsive marriages make 90% or more of the revenue from Country Halls/Civil Registry or whatever you guys call it in your respective countries. The State needs moolah!

Besides, if the marriages goes sour there's always divorce (or turning yourself into a widower)

There's also the topic of social mores…when someone proposes 'everyone' expects for the proposal to be accepted, this puts heavy social and peer-pressure weight. Which in turn makes people more prone to make a bad decision.

When in doubt: marry by separate ownership of your goods.
