Riding gives you more control but gravity is also pulling your innards down.
Lying down relieves some of that, and having your hips elevated can also help.

But.. most of the trick is relaxing your sphincter to get it in.
So comfort is important.

I think a patient/experienced top is more important than the actual position.
Even if you popper up, if he goes too fast and you don't loosen up you're going to be uncomfortable, and maybe clench.

Something about being on your front makes you more prone to tense your thighs and buttocks but your mileage may vary. People say be on top (with him laid down and you sat on him) that's ok because you have control but I still say on your back is better because your legs don't have to support your body weight which again can tense up the thighs and buttocks. even if you are on your knees either side of his body there is a tenseness about that position that can go against relaxing your asshole especially if you start off in that position. Oh yeah I'm not saying stay on your back, do it all every way you can think of and see which you like best!
