I think it's because it wasn't really until the 80's that the music press started coming up with all these various descriptors (like alternative) for music, so you basically had "rock, "pop" "jazz", "swing", and maybe a few other easily-categorized sub-genres of mainstream music. Anyway, as a result, most of the bands I think of as simply "rock" and "pop" are from these eras.

As for rock bands I really enjoy, T. Rex and Blue Öyster Cult are pretty high up there. I also love Black Sabbath, in basically all of their numerous incarnations.
