<p dir="auto">However, the message I get when I try to open the file is<br />
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."<br />
It's an mp4, so I'm thinking the file must be damaged somehow. Any suggestions?</p>

Most files will play flawlessly in VLC, but there's the odd one here and there that I run into that just will NOT play properly in VLC. Sure enough, if I open those particular files in Totem instead, they work just fine.</p>
<p dir="auto">My guess would be that it's something in the encoding of the video itself that WMP just cannot work with properly.</p>

<p dir="auto">The first thing you should try is another movie player. I use <a href="https://mpc-hc.org/" rel="nofollow ugc"><strong>Media Player Classic Home Cinema</strong></a> as my default.</p>
<p dir="auto">Then try <a href="http://www.videolan.org/" rel="nofollow ugc"><strong>VLC</strong></a></p>
