Gears of War was a incredible game, and made a big impact on third person shooters. After it there is no TPS without the Gears cover mechanic. And Prototype because it was simply amazing, one of the best action games I have ever played.

There were some other great games like GTA IV, Alan Wake, The Walking Dead, God of War 3, Last of Us, etc… But those 2 where the biggest ones to me.

By the way this new generation didn't had any games like Gears of War, God of War, those two changed everything about their genres. But this generations until now didn't show anything new, anything impressive.

Brawl for me. Made really good friends in the competitive community of that game in my town.
It had impressive visuals, amazing music, the characters were really worked on (less clone like characters than in Melee), and a lot of modes to play. It is still an amazing party game.

Bayonetta is a great action game, with excellent and fun gameplay. I also enjoyed the music a lot, specially the angel and major battle themes.
Demon/Dark Souls. I bought Demon Souls on a whim. I had heard that it was a pretty good game, so I bought it without even watching gameplay videos. I was hooked instantly.
Dragon's Dogma. it's an action RPG with really good gameplay. Think Devil May Cry combined with WRPGs like Oblivion. The graphics are pretty average, and world map isn't as big and doesn't have much variety (only one city, and two small towns), but the gameplay definitely makes up for it. I got almost 200 in just one playthrough.
