<![CDATA[A VPN question]]>I am so very tired of my Vuze not connecting/seeding/NAT firewalls and such, that I am about to give up and go back to uTorrent that I used when I was on a PC (on a Mac now). That said, when I used uTorrent, I got caught and so want to avoid all those nasty, scary letters in the mail threatening to sue me for ruining whole studios with my singular download.

So, yes, I know that I apparently need to get a VPN, and I've read up on some of my options. My question(s) are a bit more basic than that, namely:

1. Will all my interest traffic automatically go through the VPN (like my visits to MSNBC), or can it be designed for just certain features. I know the VPN results in some loss of speed, so if I can avoid running most of my internet traffic through it, all the better.

2. Once established, I assume that it would work on any internet system I can connect to, like Starbucks, or a hotel, etc. and not need re-configuring for every different wireless connection. Are my assumptions correct?

I hope to do this soon before I once again destroy my ratio here (I've lost almost an entire 1 point on my ratio b/c of this problem). So any guidance is great and well-appreciated.

For instance the other day it said I was the only one seeding and no-one had completed, the site said said 2 people were seeding and 2 had completed. I am not sure how reliable its ratio figures are.

If you really want to check your gt.ru figures, take a copy of the figures at the top of this page before and after you grab some files. You can use PrtScn or the snipping tool

And, dangkhoa, given the amount of data you have shared (and a very nice ratio, to boot) you could download a complete DVD and it would have negligible effect on your ratio - it would go from approx 1.007 to 1.000, and you'd still have a buffer of over 300 GB before you dropped to the minimum ratio 🙂

In many cases they aren't comparable, because they display values for different things.

Ratio: On GayTorrent.ru Profiles is the result of the all time registered uploads and downloads of all torrents from GayTorrent.ru of a member*. This can origin from multiple clients and computer devices.

It is not a ratio by torrent inside a client as you see for example in µTorrent's ratio column, nor is it the global ratio of µTorrent > Help > Show statistics, which is including all trackers.

Upl.: In the Seeding or Leeching torrents on the Profile page are "live" information from the tracker. Interuptions of seeding or leeching will reset that value to zero. Therefore it can't be compared to the all time data per torrent in the  client.

Downl. and Ratio: in the Leeching torrents on the Profile page are "live" information from the tracker, too.

I have tried this method of port forwarding and my downloading and uploading have decent rate. However, the tracker does not seem to count my seeding percentage right. For example, I have been seeding one torrent and the ratio said it is almost 2, but the tracker said that I barely hit 0.002, and one other torrent I have downloaded almost the whole file, and a little bit of uploading but the torrent said that I have downloaded nothing and uploaded some, which in turns made my share ratio for that torrent hit infinity. So my problem is not with connections but rather with how to make sure the tracker counts correctly. Any idea?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That can happen no matter which client you use (standard torrent client).
No worries with a trustworthy VPN that allows file sharing and doesn't keep logs tho. 🙂

Port forwarding works great. Don't forward any ports on your router if you use one with PIA or another VPN with port forwarding, only enter the port# from the system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac) into your torrent client.

1. Yes, ALL your traffic will be encrypted and run through the VPN…everything you do (chat, file share, web surfing, all).

2. Yep, should work on any network you can connect to AFAIK, and no reconfiguration needed.

The VPN client that PIA provides also has a built in internet kill switch so NO traffic will run through your regular connection in case you disconnect from the VPN.

Many users find they need to enable port forwarding in order to get the best speeds and connectivity with torrent clients. In order to enable port forwarding in our client, enter the Settings area for our client, and click the Advanced button. Enable port forwarding and select one of the following gateways:

Netherlands
Switzerland
CA North York
CA Toronto
Romania
Sweden
France
Germany

After enabling port forwarding and re-connecting to one of the above gateways, please hover your mouse over the System Tray or Menu Bar icon for our client to reveal the tool-tip which will display the port number. You can then enter this port into your software, like uTorrent or another torrent client.

This should help your uploads.

I use Toronto Canada and realize negligible loss of speed.

The second part of your query I think would be impacted by the requirement to designate a specific port in utorrent for port forwarding depending upon the server you connect to.

I reviewed several: Cyberghost, TorGuard, IPVanish and others,  prior to choosing PIA and most informed me that they DO NOT support torrent traffic.

Not sure if any of this helps but at least its a starting place when you compare VPN service providers.

PS: I pay $39.95 yearly (slightly higher rate when billed monthly like $8.00US/mo maybe?) and think the cost is more than reasonable when considering the service compared to other VPN providers but please, exercise due diligence to meet your particular needs.
