All I had to do was floss every day and it went away.

But the best and most positive thing to do, is see a dentist.

In some point it helps bad breath. So, if he didn't, you can give him recommendation to use mouthwash.

But, mostly bad breath is caused by dental problem. Mouthwash only mask the odor but not cure the dental problem. Dental problems that can cause bad breath such as bacteria on the tongue, cavities, gum disease, and the worst is mouth/oral cancer. So, if your BF really have bad bad breath, I suggest to visit dentist to make sure and sort things out.  ;D
